WHITTAKER & SPICER
Rapid City, South Dakota

Here is an example of a publisher for which there is no information outside of the view itself. There are no listings of either a Whittaker or Spicer in the entire Dakota Territory during the stereoview era. The only Whittaker known to have produced stereoviews at all was R. B. Whittaker of Liberty, New York who did issue views from 1875-1885. Could this be our Whittaker? Coincidentally, there was a C. A. Spicer issuing views in Appleton, Wisconsin during the exact same years. There is no record of these men working together in Rapid City however. Still one might speculate. Based on the label "Rapid City, D. T." we can safely say that this publisher issued views before South Dakota statehood in 1889. Needless to say, this view, along with the other two known Yellowstone views by these men must be extremely rare.

A rare view by Rapid City’s Whittaker & Spicer. This image of Crystal Falls near Canyon was actually taken by
H. B. Calfee.
