D. MARSH
Big Rapids, Michigan - Bozeman, Montana
Another
of the obscure photographers of which little is known.
Marsh issued views out of his home in Big Rapids, Michigan
during the 1880’s. His numbers have been reported as high as
#140, although his Yellowstone series goes even higher. The
majority of his views may have been of Yellowstone itself. There
are several styles (indicating the possibility of multiple
printings or series). The first shows the view title over the photo in the lower right
hand corner. The second shows the title on the left side of the
view (not over the photo). Then there are views that are untitled
and unnumbered.
Marsh
was also listed out of Bozeman, Montana Territory during the
late 1880’s. However, I have never seen any views with
Bozeman shown on them.
114. Entrance to Devil’s Kitchen.
One of two styles by D. Marsh. This image
of a man at the entrance to Devil’s Kitchen (a cave near
Mammoth) shows the white striped title on the left side of the
view. It is the more scarce of the two styles.
139. Scene On Cascade Creek.
The more common D. Marsh style shows the
title over the photo on the lower right portion of the image.
This view of the bridge just above Crystal Falls is one such
example.
